Veterans took the front of the stage in Monday?s Track League racing at Palmer Park Velodrome with Rob Richardson, Hounslow & District Wheelers and Angus McInnes, RAF on the top of the bill. Angus kicked of the evening?s action by winning the Hare & Hounds 10 lap chase from Richardson, but at the close of the evening, Rob turned the tables on him and took the first League Championship of the season, when he rode home first to snatch the Dennis Cup in the Veteran?s Derny motor paced race.
Both are excellent examples of the value that cycling and cycle racing is to the human body, for neither of them show any signs of having passed the 40th milestone. If the Government , in its campaign to tackle the obesity problem that bedevils this country, were to study and publicise the health qualities of the examples in the cycling world it could be a very convincing argument to the overweight people of this world. Those two were not the only veterans racing that night to expound the virtues of cycle racing, for Paul Ramsden, South Western RC and Ian Greenstreet, Newbury RC were in the wings chasing the leaders all the way home in both the Hare & Hounds and the Championship, with Greenstreet only inches behind McInnes in the Veteran'? Sprint race.
At the other end of the scale, the current dominant leader on points of the overall League Championship table, 17 year old Lewis Atkins was only blocked once in the evening when Ian Holt, Prestige VC snatched the 500metres event from him. The younger man who has great potential could not be beaten in the 20 kilometres Endurance race. It was interesting to see that it was Rob Richardson again who topped the B riders in the Endurance event after being the major aggressor all the way through.
Those observers who were on the lookout for visiting talent must have been impressed, then shocked by the performance of Ian Holt, Prestige VC.com. He showed excellent sprinting form to win the 500metres race with a fast time of 12.8 seconds for the final 200 metres, then crashed in the early stages of the Endurance race to collect a whole series of bruises and grazes.
