New names are appearing in the results at Reading Velodrome, and no wonder since the register of riders has topped all previous records with 125 names now on the books. The popularity of track racing west of London is mushrooming this year with riders coming from all sides of London and as far away as Evesham, Devizes, Didcot & Oxford as well as the locals, which is testimony enough for a Monday evening race programme.

It was 15 year old Ben Stockdale representing Evesham & Dist Wheelers who kicked off the trend on Monday evening when he won the first event on the programme, a 6 lap Block Handicap. Local honours were upheld as the youth events progressed with Sam Serruya, Palmer Park Velo winning every other Under 16 years old race from Toby Meadows (Agiskoviner) and Michael Wilmot from Hillingdon.

Proudly wearing the yellow jersey as leader of the AW Cycles sponsored 20 kms Endurance race series, South Londoner Bryan Taylor shows no sign of relinquishing his dominance of senior racing at the Reading Velodrome this year. He opened his score chart this week with victory in the 10 laps Hare & Hounds after his A rider (Hounds) group made up their half lap handicap to catch the B Riders (Hares). Veteran rider, who scores points nearly every week, Newbury RC?s Ian Greenstreet and Willesden?s David Dentus another regular points scorer were not far behind.

Last weeks veteran hero, Rob Richardson, Hounslow & Dist, who was crowned Derny motor paced Champion met his match against Taylor in this week?s A Riders Motor paced final, but local pride was upheld in the B Riders final with Reading CC?s Trevor Bradbury holding on to the leading position. It was, however, interesting to see who was challenging him, it was junior James Boyman, Farnborough & Camberley, in his initial foray on the track this season after a forced rest due to a crash injury. Even more interesting was the knowledge that young Boyman had finished second placed in a road race the previous day. Boyman is another name to watch out for, he promises an impressive future.

Judges had a testing time to sort out finishing results in the final 20 kilometre Endurance race of the night under the glare of floodlights, for the event combined the regular AW Cycles race with the British Cycling?s Central Division Championship, while the AW Cycles event was open to all Track league registered riders. While yellow jersied Taylor romped away with the AW Cycles event, it was Reading?s Alex Peterson who snatched the British Cycling Gold medal from his AW Cycles team mate Vince Halpern with Willesden?s James Foster just holding on to third place ahead of Ian Greenstreet.

Joe Bayfield, AW Cycles who made his return to Velodrome racing last week, despite seven years away from the sport, shows signs of his old self and took his first points of the season with runners-up place to Taylor in the AW Cycles Endurance A Riders competition and Ian Greenstreet was top man in the B Riders section.
