Unassailable leader of Reading Track League, Bryan Taylor, demonstrated his dominance over the Bank Holiday weekend with a resounding victory in the British Derny motor paced Championship which took place at London?s Herne Hill Velodrome. Taylor who has been outstanding throughout the season at the Reading Velodrome showed the same power plus pedalling Reading spectators have become accustomed to watching as he led the field of nine, all chasing their Derny motor pacemakers, for much of the 66 laps still to compete he turned up the speed even more to pull away from his adversaries. Local hero Danny Rudd (Team Edwardes) and Reading?s Sam Sturgeon (trackcycling.co.uk) had already been blown off the back of the bunch and it was left to Simon Gaywood, (CC Luton) to fight out the runners up place with James Holland-Leader in the speed burst over the final lap, but nevertheless he was pleased to step up onto the podium to receive the bronze medal, his first National Championship medal.
The 50 kilometre National Derny motor paced Championship, disputed with 20 kms heats and a 30 kms final, which was instituted by the Reading Track Cycling League in 2000, returns to Palmer Park Stadium?s Velodrome next year. British Cycling, the sport?s controlling body has awarded the title race to be staged under the title Reading Velodrome Racing for Sunday June 4th 2006. The fixture will also feature a meeting of Britain?s top sprinters with a point gathering competition which will determine the best of Britain?s sprinting specialists.
