Former leading track racing club in the South, the Polytechnic CC, through its old Members Association still retains its adherence to the sport and will sponsor the 2006 British Cycling National Derny motor paced 50 kms Championship at Reading on Sunday, June 4th. 2006
When Reading Velodrome Racing proposed the introduction of this new Championships in 2000 the Polytechnic Club responded to British Cycling?s request for a Trophy to go with the title race, so next year contestants will compete under sponsorship from the Poly for a historical Poly trophy, which originally was set up for a classic long distance tandem human paced race at Herne Hill 100 years ago.
Reading Velodrome will again be the site of the 2006 title race which on the same day will also see the introduction for the first time of the new Women?s Derny paced Championship over 25 kms, following a successful experimental event at Herne Hill Velodrome in 2005.
In addition to the two National Championships that day the programme will also include a round of British Cycling National Sprinters League as well as a classic Endurance race to round off a full supporting programme.
With sprinters and stayers on the same programme at a time when National and World Championships have just become winter contests at indoor velodromes, the promoters will expect to see members of the British World Class performance squad taking part in the title races.
