Reading Velodrome Racing Story & Results from Palmer Park. 17th July 2006

Janet Birkmyre Reading's leading lady sprinter notched up two significant victories over the last two days, Sunday and Monday (July 16/17) Spreading her wings northwards she registered her third victory in British Cycling's National Women's Omnium championship series at Scunthorpe on Sunday, and the next day on her home velodrome she made sure of securing BC's Central Region Women's Omnium title. 'That Championship is in my pocket' quipped Janet at Reading, and with just two more rounds of the title left to dispute at Newport and Halesowen next month, she is in good form to take the Championship gold, a step up from the bronze medal she won in last year's Women's National Sprint Championship. At Reading she won both the points score and the sprint sections and ran second to Carrie Bedingfield, Team Luciano-Kuota, in the 5 lap individual pursuit event.

Surprise of the night came in the final race, the A W Cycles sponsored 20 kilometres Endurance event, when junior Tom Price, VC St.Raphael came within a whisker of beating Joe Bayfield who showed that he was on a winning streak with three wins in the bag already. The man who did succeed in getting his wheel in front of Bayfield was veteran Rob Richardson, Hounslow & Dist. Wh, an undisputed challenger to any adversary, who solved the mystery of the Unknown Distance event to hit the finish line first. It was get even time for Rob who had been beaten by Bayfield in the Devil take the Hindmost race.
