Report and results from Reading Palmer Park Velodrome 21st June 2004

Youth League racing in the Reading Velodrome Racing programme at Palmer park Stadium on Monday evening got the best of the weather before torrential rain washed out all activity on two wheels. Five names dominated the result list of the three events that took place under favourable skies. Christopher Bradbury, Palmer Park Velo, won all three of the under 16 races, Sam Serruya did the same in the under 14 events and Matthew Legg, Palmer Park Velo took two of the three under 12 competitions. The two young ladies who made a mark on the results lists and dented some of the young males were Lara Wann and Emily Clark, both members of the highly successful Palmer park Velo youth club which holds its own meetings at the Velodrome every Saturday morning.

There is no holding this year?s star of the League racing, 17 years old Lewis Atkins, he put his wheel over the finishing line first in both the 10 laps Hare and Hounds and the 500 metres Senior sprint races. The Hare & Hounds is effectively a handicap race with B riders starting half a lap of the Velodrome?s 460 metres ahead of the A riders. So its virtually a massed pursuit match with the As trying to catch the Bs. Despite his youthfulness Atkins closed the gap and still had enough power left to cross the line ahead of Angus McInnes the veteran RAF rider.

He meted out the same treatment to his opponents in the 500 metres scratch race, this time leaving his effort until he swept into the straight, before delivering the coup de grace to Richard Guthrie, Willesden CC and the youthful Sam Sturgeon who has so much promise as a Derny motor paced competitor.

Sadly the rain blocked Sam?s chance to show off on Monday for it started dropping before the programme arrived at the motor paced event. It also prevented the final of the Veteran?s 500 metre scratch race which promised exceptional action especially from Paul Ramsden, South Western R.C. who hoodwinked his opponents in the heat to score a runaway victory after attacking with three quarters of a lap to go.
