Report and Results

Persistence certainly paid off for Sam Sturgeon when he took two British Cycling Central Division Championship medals in Monday?s cycle racing at Palmer Park Velodrome. Sam has been knocking on the door of success all through the season and developing his speed with plenty of work training and racing behind pacemaking Derny motors. Sam?s mentor Sturgeon Senior Clive, looked even more elated than Sam when he won the Division?s Sprint title and in the final event of the evening snatched third place medal in the 20 kilometre Divisional Championship. It was a busy night?s work for Sam because he had also taken third place in the Derny motor race after setting the pace in the early stages. But if persistence brought success for Sturgeon it was pure focus on one objective that paid off for Roger Woodford, Willesden CC who had decided to concentrate his attention solely on the B.C.Division 20 kilometre title race. In a race that saw numerous attacks he never missed a chance, a solo breakaway didn?t pay off for him but he joined in every serious attempt to open up a gap to make sure that he remained in the leading group. His determination to take the title showed through clearly as he pounded his way up the finishing straight chasing the gold medal. Of the several attackers in the race the one who got the most appreciation from the spectators was Clara beard for the Endurance event was open to all, ladies, seniors, juniors and veterans, in a free for all competition. At one stage Clara had gained half a lap lead by herself, and during a quiet spell in the race it began to look quite a serious attack. However, she was reeled in and finished in the main group as best lady. Clara?s appearance at Reading will be short lived, however, for as a Canadian she is just visiting the UK and soon is to return to her studies in the USA. Earlier in the evening the 20 year old had shown her strength when she took part in the veterans Derny motor racing and was far from disgraced.

Also in the evening?s honours list from the Youth department, James Boyman, Team Luciano, was outstanding. He won three of the four races he competed in as an under 16 year old, but really showed his future potential when he completed the 20 kilometre race and was placed third in the B rider section. Watch out for this name in the future.
