From John Dennis
The sheer doggedness that Rob Richardson puts into his bike racing at the Reading Velodrome deservedly won him Championship status on Monday when he devastated his co-finalists in the Track League?s Veteran Derny motor paced title race for the Dennis Cup. Defending Champion Graham Hindle found the pace set by Richardson too hot to handle, and it was left to pilot Angus McInnes, RAF CC to challenge the Hounslow rider, but even his wings could not get him closer than the 100 metres that separated the two as they charged up the home straight to the finishing line.
Sprint powerhouse, Lee Povey who has moved up from B to A rider class showed that he still stays in the points winning situation with a clear cut victory in the 500metres A sprint final, but new names are beginning to emerge as the season progresses. Povey, for all his strength was strongly challenged by AW Cycles rider Alex Petersen and John Glasher, Agiskoviner, in the run up to the finish line.
New names? Another to watch out for is juvenile Alex Aldam-Breary. An under 16 year old, already signed up with top team PCA Ciclos Uno, and riding against B class senior riders, was only just beaten on the line in the 500 metres sprint by Steve Benton, Team trackcycling.co.uk, and scored one place better when he finished best B rider in the AW Cycles 20 kilometre Endurance, closing event of the bitterly cold evening?s programme.
There was no holding Bryan Taylor VC Londres, he still shows a superiority that has been impossible to beat at Reading this year, for he won both distance races, the 10 lap and the 20 kilometres, but Lewis Atkins, the 2004 League Champion, despite his limited years, is showing signs that he is overcoming his injury setbacks, for he was runner up to Taylor in both these races, even if he missed the breakaway when Alex Petersen, AW Cycles, snatched the Unknown Distance event. Taylor at present dominates the League?s points table, and also the Endurance event?s season long Championship score chart.
Fifteen years old Lara Wann, Palmer Park Velo, who is now demonstrating her talent in National events on the road, elected to move up from the Youth League and once again proved best lady in the AW Cycles 20 kilometre event. She stayed in the leading bunch throughout the race, which featured a number of breakaway efforts, to finish in the main group.
